How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Tyler Berrystone2 October 2026 · 7 min read

The short answer

Google says edits can take up to three days to appear and that rankings for a new business can take up to a month to show in search results. That's how long it takes to get into the running, not to get near the top. Where you settle depends on distance, which you can't change, and on reviews and how well known you are, which build over months.

You’ve set up your Google listing, or fixed it, and now you want to know when the phone will start ringing. It’s a fair question, and most answers you’ll find online are either “it depends” (true, but useless) or a confident number of weeks that nobody can actually back up.

Here’s what Google itself says about timings, what takes longer and why, and how to tell whether you’re getting anywhere.

What Google says, in one table

These are Google’s own figures from its Business Profile help pages and Search Central, checked on 2 October 2026.

What How long, in Google’s words
Verifying a new profile “verification reviews take up to five working days. On rare occasions, reviews may take longer.”
Edits to your business info “changes can take up to three days to appear”
Service area changes “If approved, service area edits may take up to 48 hours to show”
A new business appearing in rankings “Rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results”
Replies to reviews “usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes a review can take up to 30 days”
New website pages being crawled “Crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks”
Appeals against a suspension “can take up to five working days”

Two things stand out. First, a month is the longest Google talks about, and it’s for appearing, not for ranking well. Second, verification comes first. Google says “Only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search”, so the clock doesn’t start until you’re verified.

Why “showing up” and “ranking well” are different

Google ranks local results on three things:

  • Relevance: “how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for”
  • Distance: “how far each business is from the customer who’s searching”
  • Prominence: “how well-known a business is”, which is “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have”

Each of those moves at a different speed. That’s the honest answer to “how long”.

Relevance: days

Your name, category, services, description and service areas can all be put right in an afternoon, and Google says edits show within three days. This is the quick part. If your category is wrong or your profile is half empty, fixing it is the fastest win there is. See which Google Business Profile category should a trade pick.

Distance: never changes

This is the one nobody can speed up, because it isn’t about you. It’s about where the person searching is standing.

What we have seen

Luke and Dan’s, a tree surgery firm based in Royal Wootton Bassett, were 1st of 17 on Google’s list for “tree surgeon” in Royal Wootton Bassett on 19 September 2026. In August 2026, with 5.0 stars from 91 reviews, they ranked below four firms for “tree surgeon Swindon”, every one of them with a Swindon address. Read their case study.

No amount of waiting would have changed that. Distance is why every firm does best in its own town, and why a town six miles away is best reached through your website rather than the map.

Prominence: months

Reviews and links from other websites build up over time, and you can only earn them at the speed you do jobs. If the firms above you have ten times your reviews, closing that gap takes as long as it takes to do that many jobs and ask every customer.

What we have seen

When we started with Swindon Transport & Recovery on 29 September 2026, the recovery firms already showing on Google Maps had between 59 and 425 Google reviews each. Swindon Transport & Recovery had none, and did not show on Maps even for its own name. Read their case study.

That’s the realistic picture for a new firm in a busy trade. The listing and website can be right in a week. The reviews take as long as the work does.

A real from-zero example, with the results still to come

Swindon Transport & Recovery is a brand-new recovery firm. Here’s the record, from the case study.

  • 24 September 2026: work started on the website. Nothing went live yet.
  • 29 September 2026 (Day 0), before anything went live: a verified Google listing and nothing else. No website, no reviews, nothing in six months of calls or website clicks from the listing, and not on Maps for its own name or for five recovery searches in Swindon.
  • Then: the listing rebuilt with the proper name, three categories, a real description, 24-hour opening, eight towns, fifteen services and photos.
  • 30 September 2026: website live, six days after work started, with twelve pages: one for each of four services and eight towns. Search Console verified, sitemap submitted.
  • From 29 October 2026: the same Maps searches, from the same pinned point in Swindon, checked again.

We haven’t filled the results in yet, because the month isn’t up. When it is, they’ll go on the case study, good or bad. That’s the only honest way to answer “how long does it take”: measure from a fixed starting point and show what happened.

What you can change this week

Most of what’s in your control is quick:

  1. Get verified, if you aren’t. Nothing else counts until you are.
  2. Use your real trading name, nothing added.
  3. Set the right primary category and only a few genuine extras.
  4. Hide your address if customers don’t come to you, and set the towns you cover. See how to show on Google Maps without a shop address.
  5. Fill in services, hours, description and photos.
  6. Link a website that says your trade and your towns on the first screen.
  7. Start asking every customer for a review, the day you finish the job. See how to get more Google reviews.

How to measure your own progress

Rankings move about with where the person searching is standing, so checking from your sofa tells you very little. To measure properly:

  • Check the same searches every time. Your trade and your town (“roofer Chippenham”), plus your exact business name.
  • Check from the same place. Type the town into the search, or search with your phone’s location off.
  • Write down the date and your position. Once a month is plenty. Daily checking just shows noise.
  • Look at your Business Profile’s Performance screen. It shows the calls and website clicks that came from your listing, which is a truer test than any single search.
  • Count what actually matters: enquiries and jobs won, not positions.

Red flags

  • “Page one in 30 days, guaranteed.” Google says “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google”, and there’s “no way to request or pay for a better local ranking”.
  • A fake address in a bigger town to rank faster. It breaks Google’s rules, profiles get suspended for it, and you lose far more time than you’d save. See Google Business Profile suspended.
  • Changing everything every week. Edits take up to three days to show and some get checked. Make a change, give it time, then measure.

How we do it, and why it works

This is the “found” part of what we do. We start by measuring where you really stand: Google’s list for your trade in your town, from a fixed point, and the numbers from your Business Profile. Then we fix the listing and work it every week, ask every customer for a review after the job, and build a website made to be called, with a page for each service and town. Then we measure the same way each month, so you can see what’s moved and when.

While that builds, we make sure no enquiry is wasted. Calls ring you, as they always have. A missed call from a mobile gets a text back in your name, every form and message is replied to in your name, and every quote is chased to a yes or a no. After each enquiry, a text asks whether you won it and for how much, and once a month you get one page: what came in, what you won, what it was worth.

It works because it doesn’t rely on ranking alone: more of the customers who already find you become jobs, while the slower parts catch up. You pay nothing until you’ve won £500 of work through us. The free check shows where you sit today for your trade in your town, in about a minute.

Questions people also ask

How long does it take for a Google Business Profile to show up?

It has to be verified first, because Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. Google says verification reviews take up to five working days, and rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Google says verification reviews take up to five working days, and on rare occasions longer. In some cases it verifies instantly, for example when you've already verified your website in Google Search Console.

How long does it take for Google Business Profile changes to update?

Google says changes to your business info can take up to three days to appear. Service area edits, if approved, may take up to 48 hours to show, and replies to reviews usually take up to 10 minutes but sometimes up to 30 days.

Can I pay to rank faster on Google Maps?

No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You can pay for adverts, but the normal list of firms underneath is earned, and anyone promising you a guaranteed spot is promising something Google says it doesn't sell.

How long does it take to get to the top of Google Maps?

There's no fixed answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. It depends on how far the people searching are from you, how many reviews the firms above you have, and how well your listing and website match the search. Measure where you are now, fix what can be fixed, and check again the same way each month.
